SEO, Content, Simple SEO Podcast
Have you found yourself wondering if you can use Chat GPT content on your website? I get this question a lot. I can see the appeal, especially for those who aren’t in love with writing like I am. However, I always caution against using AI content on your website for a few reasons.
The first thing you want to remember is that Chat GPT and other AI tools are just that; they’re tools. They’re not writers. They don’t have new or unique thoughts. The information inside the database powers them. Which means, the content they write isn’t new or unique. It’s content they’ve found somewhere else on the web.
Google wants the content it shows to searchers to be helpful, new, unique, provide a different perspective, etc. It doesn’t want to show the same information on five different websites. Google looks for duplicate content across websites and generally doesn’t rank those with duplicate content high.

Another concern, and the reason I don’t recommend using Chat GPT content on your website, is that we see a lot of misinformation and inaccuracies in the content it creates. AI tools are just that; they’re tools. They don’t know that the information they’re reading online is incorrect. They’re not experts in the field like you are.
If you use an AI tool to help create your content, have a subject matter expert review it for accuracy. Google doesn’t rank websites with incorrect information high in the search results.
Google grades all websites on a system called E-E-A-T which stands for experience, expertise, authority, and trust. Google wants you to showcase your experience and expertise in the content that you create. If Chat GPT or another AI tool is creating content for you, it’s not going to have your insights, stories, or case studies because you aren’t the one writing the content. Yes, you can edit it and include that information, but you still have a lot of potential for duplicate content or inaccurate information in what’s been generated by the tool.
Google initially said no AI-generated content. None. Zero. Zip. They did go back and review their stance and update it after Chat GPT and other tools became popular. Now, Google says it’s OK to use the tools, but you still need to focus on providing helpful content, E-E-A-T, and more. They still don’t want you to have AI tools create the content for you, but you can use them to help guide the writing process.
Now, there were some people who tried to take advantage of AI content and posted tons of AI content to their sites and did briefly get a lot of organic traffic from Google. However, like all other SEO hacks people have tried over the years, Google cracked down on it quickly. Google created an AI spam update and removed at least 40% of the AI spam content from their index the first time the algorithm was run. Cheaters don’t win for long with Google. They won temporarily, and they got a lot of organic traffic, but as soon as the AI spam update was released, those sites were gone from Google’s index. And if it’s anything like the Panda and Penguin updates of a decade ago, they won’t easily recover.
Chat GPT and other AI tools are just that, they’re tools and they can be used in many ways to help create the content for your website or blog. I have a post and podcast episode with three ways to use AI tools to help with your SEO and not get in trouble with Google. You can check it out over here.
The short answer is no. I write all of my content myself. I’m not in love with the AI tools like so many are, but I also went to journalism school, and I love to write. I know that not everyone feels the same way about writing that I do. Heck, my own son doesn’t love writing the way that I do, and it’s so hard for me to wrap my head around that one. Lol. But he loves science and his little math and science brain is not in love with writing like his mama’s brain is. Anyway. I have students who struggle with writing content, too, so I’ve worked with the AI tools to see how they can help speed up the process, and there are some things you can do to help create website content faster and easier with them.
I love to use Chat GPT or other AI tools to help with brainstorming. If you’re not sure what topic you want to write about, you can ask it for a list of 10 potential topics for your niche. You can ask it for title suggestions for your blog post. You can ask it to review the copy on a blog post or website page and let you know if there’s anything else you should add.
You can ask some of the tools to review two website pages or blog posts and provide tips on how to get one to outrank the other in Google search. You can ask the tools to write your SEO elements, like your title tags and meta descriptions, for you. You do need to let the tool know how long you want it to be and what keyword to use. If you’re unsure how to write them, request my free Beginner’s Guide to SEO today, and it will walk you through the SEO process step-by-step.
Don’t use Chat GPT or another AI tool to create website content for you. The tools aren’t good enough to do that today. Maybe they will be in the future, but for now, they’re tools, not writers. You still need to be involved in the writing process if you want your website to rank high on Google and get organic traffic.
