You’ve likely heard that SEO is important to your website or blog, but you may not know why or how to get started. Have you ever found yourself Googling, How can I learn SEO? Heck, maybe that’s how you found yourself here. If it is, welcome my new friend! I’m glad you found my blog because it’s full of great SEO tips for you.
First, you can learn SEO on your own. There are lots of YouTube videos and blogs like this one that will teach you more about SEO. Maybe that’s what you’re doing right now – you’re checking out everything you can on social media and reading every blog post you can find that looks like it might help.
This is obviously the lowest-cost option since reading blog posts and watching YouTube videos is free, but it’s also likely the most labor-intensive because you’re left to figure it all out on your own.
Second, you can take a class and learn SEO that way. Maybe you’ve thought about taking a class and tried to decide what the best option was for you. You can take an online SEO class, or you might even be able to find one that’s offered in person.
Taking a class on SEO is a great idea if you take a class with someone who is a true SEO expert, and this is where I’m going to encourage you to do your homework to make sure the teacher knows enough. Many people offer SEO services or teach SEO who have no professional SEO background. They maybe figured it out for themselves and now offer it as a service or a class. You want to be sure the person you learn from is a true expert who knows & follows the rules because there are some VERY important SEO rules.
How can you do your homework? I’d encourage you to check out your teacher’s LinkedIn profile. Go through their professional work experience. Do they have any in the field? Have they held a position in charge of SEO for a company? The thing is, anyone can claim to be an SEO because there isn’t a certification, test, degree program, etc., to become an SEO. You have to learn it on your own, attend industry conferences, work on larger teams with other smart SEOs, etc.
If you’re going to take a class, I encourage you to take one from someone who’s been a professional SEO. You want to make sure you get the right training. You’re spending your money; you want to get results.
It will cost you a bit more to take a class than to learn on your own, but you’re saving yourself hours of frustration and confusion. If you’ve chosen a teacher who’s a professional SEO, you should also be saving yourself from doing it wrong and not getting results.
Third, you can hire an SEO consultant or strategist to do your SEO for you and teach you SEO. I do this with my coaching clients, and it’s fun. We work on their SEO and content strategies together, and by the end of our coaching, they’ve got the strategy, and they understand how SEO works, so they can keep doing it themselves. If you want to learn SEO, this can be a great option. It’s nice to have the dedicated 1:1 time to discuss your website strategy.
Whichever option you choose, I’m excited that you’re looking to learn SEO because I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference it makes for businesses. Once you get your SEO strategy in place and it starts to work, there’s no turning back…the website traffic, the leads, and the sales start rolling in. I love that about SEO.
The best part is that you only have to learn it once. Then, you keep repeating the steps repeatedly on new content, and you see the results grow.
