Search GPT SEO Tips

SEO, SEO for Beginners, Simple SEO Podcast

Search GPT is Chat GPT's new search engine. It launch in late 2024. It's a new search engine, and that means it's time to discuss how we do SEO for Search GPT. You don't want to ignore this one; while it currently has a small market share, it's growing quickly, and given Chat GPT's popularity, it likely will continue to grow. How we optimize for Search GPT is similar to how we do SEO for Google, but there are some differences you need to know to improve your chances of showing up in the search results on Search GPT.

How does Search GPT work?

Much like Google, Search GPT is trying to connect users with the best content to answer their questions and help them. With this in mind, everything you've learned about Google SEO and creating helpful content still applies here. Search GPT looks for the answers to the searchers' questions and provides websites that it believes have the information they're searching for. The good news is that what you've learned for Google SEO is applicable to Search GPT SEO. We're still going to use the same SEO elements and create great content for our audiences.

What Type of Content do you need to create for Search GPT SEO?

You don't need to create new or different content to rank in Search GPT's search results. You need to continue to create great, high-quality content that helps your ideal customer and provides value to them. Focus on your readers, anticipate the questions they have on the subject, and be sure to answer those in your piece. You don't need to have one version of a blog post for Google and another for Search GPT or anything like that. One optimized blog post following traditional SEO best practices should easily work for both search engines. Some things can help you rank higher in Search GPT from a content formatting standpoint.

Write clear, concise headlines.

This really isn't unique to Search GPT SEO, but it's important. The AI-based search engine is going to look at the headline to see if it has the information someone has searched for, similar to how an actual reader will read the headline to decide if they want to read the article. Don't get super cutesy or be punny in your headlines if you want a better chance of ranking in Search GPT's search results or having someone click through to read your article.

Anticipate and Answer Your Reader's Questions

Anticipate your ideal customer's questions on this subject, and be sure to answer them in your content. If you're not sure what questions people have on this subject, you can look for additional ideas in Google's People Also Ask section (on the search results page) or by using a tool like Answer the Public. Be sure to answer the questions clearly in your piece.

Break up your content into smaller, easier-to-read blocks of text.

Use header tags to separate your content (those are the sentences with bigger font in my blog post here). Include your SEO keyword in the header tags to help Google understand this page is about that particular keyword. Short paragraphs, bullet points, and lists are ideal for Search GPT SEO. They also improve the overall readability of your blog post or website page. You want to have white space between paragraphs and avoid big blocks of text because they can overwhelm readers. Breaking things into smaller, more manageable chunks is better for the reader and Search GPT SEO.

Search GPT SEO Keyword Tips

Some of my students have asked me if SEO keywords matter for Search GPT, and the answer is yes, they do. You still want to focus on choosing keywords that your ideal customer would use when searching for information and use those keywords throughout your content piece, header tags, and other traditional SEO elements.

You want to choose more long-tail keywords for Search GPT and incorporate them into your content. Honestly, most small business owners should be using long-tail keywords for Google, too, because the 1-2 keyword phrases tend to be ultra-competitive and super hard to rank for in Google Search.

What are your Search GPT SEO Best Practices?

You will want to continue creating SEO elements for each website page or blog post you write. You'll still need to  choose a unique keyword for each page or post and use it in the following places:

  • Meta Description
  • Title Tag
  • Image File Name
  • Image ALT Text
  • Header Tags
  • Copy

Search GPT SEO Tech Tips

Tech SEO recommendations are the same for Search GPT and Google. You will still want to make sure your website loads quickly, your images are compressed (or minified), and your website is responsive.

You can use the Google Page Speed Test to determine if your website has a page speed issue or not. You can use a tool like Jpeg Mini to minify or compress your images; there are also Wordpress plug-ins you can use to do this. And finally, your website template is most likely already responsive - what responsive means is that it looks good on any size screen - phone, tablet, or computer.
