Blogging, SEO, SEO for Beginners, Simple SEO Podcast
Normally, I recommend you create one blog post each week, adding four to your website in a month. Sometimes, I get questions from potential students who tell me they can’t do that. They’re still working a full-time job, or they’re caring for a family member, and they’re only able to write one post a month, and they wonder if it’s even worth starting. They want to know if writing one blog post a month will work for SEO or if it’s a waste of time.
Blogging weekly is ideal, but it’s not the only schedule that can help drive traffic to your website. If it's done right and SEO-friendly, we can see results with 3, 2, or even 1 blog post each month.
Google isn’t focused on the quantity of content you create. They’re more interested in the quality of your content. They want you to create content that’s helpful for your audience and optimized for search engines. As long as you’re creating the right content, you can be rewarded by Google with higher rankings and more website traffic.
The reason I recommend weekly posting is that evergreen content continues to bring people to your site long after it’s posted. Each post builds momentum. Over time, the content you create builds and drives more traffic. If you post 1 post per month, you have 12 opportunities to rank high on Google or in AI like ChatGPT or Perplexity. If you blog weekly, then you have up to 52 chances to rank. I personally tell my students to plan for 50 blog posts a year because they’ll likely want to take a few weeks off during the holidays or for vacation.
If you write monthly blog posts, that gives you 12 chances to rank. Let’s say that you have a keyword that brings in 100 visits a month. By the end of the year, you will have 1,200 visits a month to your 12 blog posts. The next year, you’ll have 24 blog posts driving traffic, so you could have 2,400 visits a month to your website.
Yes, weekly blogging will grow your traffic faster than monthly, but you’ll still be able to build your website traffic with monthly posting. It’s better to start with a frequency you feel comfortable with than trying to push yourself to do more than you can right now and ending up not creating new content consistently. Consistency is important for your audience. Fewer posts on a regular schedule work just fine until you can start (if you want) creating more content.
If you’re only going to create one post a month, you want to make it the best post you can write. You’ll want to focus on your ideal customer and make sure the piece you’re creating is something they’re interested in, searching for, and want to read. You’ll then want to make sure it’s optimized for both Google and AI search. This is important; if you want to get traffic to your blog post, you need to make sure it’s optimized. Here are a few tips to help your blog post drive traffic to your website.
Use tools like Google’s Suggested Search, ChatGPT, Answer the Public, or your own customer insights to help brainstorm blog post ideas that your ideal customer is interested in.
Take your blog post ideas and use an SEO keyword research tool to determine which keyword is the best opportunity for your website. You want to choose the one with the highest search volume that your website has the best chance of ranking for on Google from a competitive standpoint. Remember to think about consumer intent when choosing a keyword. Think about what your ideal customer is searching for when they’re searching with the keyword you’re considering using, and make sure your blog post answers their query.
You can create the best content, but if it’s not optimized it won’t get found on Google. And today, if you don’t format for AI like ChatGPT or Perplexity, you won’t get found there. It’s important to make sure you think about Google and AI SEO to help your content be found easily by the people you’re creating it for.
I have students with website pages or blog posts that rank for keywords that drive hundreds of website visits each month. If you have a great blog post that’s well optimized, that can happen for you too. The great thing about SEO is that it’s repeatable and scalable. What one blog post each month can be doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled if you start creating more content. It’s not required, but it’s possible.
I have students whose blog posts rank for keywords that drive hundreds of visits to their websites each month. Each blog post they create ranks for different keywords and drives website traffic. Whether you’re creating 12 posts or 50 posts in a year, you’re still getting more traffic to your site.
You don’t have to post weekly to drive traffic; it just helps you drive more traffic. You can get started by creating new content once a month if you do it the right way. You want to think about your ideal customer, your niche, and make sure it’s optimized for Google and AI search if you want it to get found and be helpful to your audience.
