What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization, and what that means is the process we go through to make our websites easier for Google to understand what they’re about. Why do we need to help Google understand our websites? Well, if Google doesn’t know what our site is about, they’re less likely to show it to people when they search for information. It’s in your best interest to learn what SEO is and do it on your website.

What should a beginner do for SEO?

Great question! Here’s where my 3 SEO tips for beginners will come in handy. When you are just starting with SEO, it can feel overwhelming or confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. Focus on these three areas, and you’ll have a good foundation for your website.

  • Research the keywords you’ve brainstormed, find the search volume, and see how competitive they are to rank for. You can check competitiveness by going to Google and searching the keyword. See what shows up on page 1 and determine how similar your website is to those ranking on page 1. Be honest during this step because choosing a keyword with lots of search volume isn’t always the best answer. You want a keyword that you can rank for, too. I teach this process in-depth in my Simple SEO course, but for now, start by checking out the websites that rank on Page 1 and see who’s there and how similar they are to your website. If they’re very similar, you’re probably headed in the right direction.

  • Create a website page or blog post for the keyword you want to optimize. Add SEO-friendly copy, a Title Tag, and a meta description to that page or blog post.

Doing these three things will help Google understand your content better. When Google understands the content on a website or blog, they're more likely to show it to people searching for information related to the content on your website. When you do SEO on your website, you have a better chance of ranking high in the search results and getting free organic traffic.
