There are so many different ways you can market your podcast, but I’ve only seen a few actually produce great results (make money for your business). If you want your podcast to help your business grow, you need to be strategic about your marketing.

First, if you want your podcast to help drive revenue for your business, you need to be strategic and focus on creating content that serves your ideal customer. It’s going to be more important for you to think about what you’re covering on your podcast episodes than for someone who’s just podcasting for fun.

Each episode you create can be another chance to connect with your ideal customer, nurture them, or answer questions that help them get ready to convert (spend money with you). You need to think about your ideal customer when creating podcast episode topics. If you can’t answer the question, “What’s in it for me?” from their perspective, you probably shouldn’t bother with this particular episode.

Make sure you have episodes that address your customers’ questions at each step of the sales funnel if you want to make money. Doing SEO on a podcast is quite simple and very effective, which is why it’s my favorite marketing strategy for podcasts. You’ll want to use keywords in your podcast to help your ideal customer find the episodes when they search the apps. Think about your ideal customer and the words they might be searching for when they’re looking at an app and trying to find a new show to listen to. Would your ideal customer be searching for something like weight loss tips, entrepreneurship, online marketing, healthy dinners, mom tips, etc? What is it that they’d be looking for?

 

Once you have a list of keywords your ideal customer is likely using to search for information in the podcast apps, you’ll want to start to use it in the correct places.

 

Your keywords need to be used in the show name and description. You can use the same keyword in both spots, or you can use different keywords. There are fewer rules about keyword use for podcasts than for websites or blogs. This makes SEO on podcasts easier than on websites and blogs. You can also use a keyword in your name or title line. The name line is more important than other elements, so you want to use your most important keyword there.

 

You’ll also want to optimize your individual episodes. You can use keywords in your episode titles, descriptions, and show notes pages (you may have different keywords for your show notes since they’re going to be found on Google, not in the podcast app).

When you focus on podcast SEO instead, you’re working to connect with the person who’s already a podcast listener and is actively looking for information within the app because they want to listen to something right now. The person who wants to listen right now and is searching for information in the app has a much higher chance of listening to your show than the person who sees an audio gram or short-form video about it on social media.

My second favorite podcast marketing strategy is guesting on other podcasts. If you’re a good podcast guest and can provide value and be helpful to someone else’s audience, you can benefit greatly from guesting on other podcasts. You know, people who are listening to another show are interested in podcasts, and if they like you on the show they’re used to listening to, they’ll be very likely to check out your show and listen to you directly. You don’t have to convince podcast listeners to listen to a podcast – they already like them. You only have to provide value on the show you’re on, and they’ll naturally want to listen to your show too.
